Since our company's founding in Baton Rouge in 2001, Mattress Direct has always believed in giving something back to the communities that surround us. And that commitment continues as we join forces with Relief Bed International, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing bedding to the homeless, both in the U.S. and in nations around the world.
The match between the two organizations is idyllic. The motto of Relief Bed International is "Changing the World One Bed at a Time," and Mattress Direct has always been dedicated to helping people get a great night's sleep, something that's vital to our physical, emotional and mental well-being.
Relief Bed International's founder, industry veteran Scott Smalling, has spent his adult life in the bedding industry, following in the footsteps of his grandfather who founded their mattress manufacturing company 70 years ago.
Among his accomplishments, Scott created the ComforPedic® mattress brand and sold it to Simmon® and joined the firm as President and Chief of Specialty Innovations. While deriving great pleasure from his work in the bedding industry, Steve found his greatest sense of fulfillment through philanthropy. Recognizing the world-wide need for better sleep, Scott eventually left Simmons and founded Relief Bed International in 2015.
So why Relief Bed International? The answer is that behind water and food, sleep is the number three essential for sustaining life. On any given night in the U.S. alone, over a half-million people are homeless and, presumably, bed less. As Smalling has said, “Millions of people around the world either sleep on the hard ground, floor or on a couch, which does not provide the proper back support or pressure relief to the body to ensure a rejuvenating night's rest."
