When and How to Flip Your Mattress
Fri Jan 12 2018

We can all agree that it’s important to have high quality bedding in order to get a good night’s sleep. And anyone who has recently purchased a mattress knows that a mattress is a big investment, and to get the maximum return on that investment it’s essential to keep your mattress in top shape as long as possible. One of the keys to extending the life of your mattress is to flip it occasionally, but what does “occasionally” mean? Admittedly, knowing when to flip your mattress is somewhat subjective, and "occasionally" might mean something totally different to you than to someone else. So, we’ll offer you a couple of guidelines.
Consider the age of your mattress
During the first year after purchase, you’ll need to flip your mattress more often than usual because it’s during that first year that most of the settling occurs.
During the first year, every 30 days rotate your mattress so that the foot becomes the head, and if you have a double-sided mattress, flip it over every other month. Continue this rotating/flipping schedule throughout the first year.
Beyond the first year, a general rule of thumb is that rotating and flipping may be done with each change of the seasons.
The result of all this rotating and flipping is that your mattress will wear evenly, free of the sags that come from constantly sleeping in the same spot.
Listen to your body
In addition to the age of your mattress, it’s also essential to listen to your own body. Because everyone’s sleeping position is different, and every mattress is different as well, the suggestions we’ve given should just be a general guide. If you’re finding it difficult to get comfortable at night or you’re waking with aches and pains, that could be a sign that you’re due for another rotation and flip, no matter when you did the last one. Or perhaps it’s time to buy a new mattress. Listening to your own body is the best way to determine when to flip or when it’s time to opt for a new mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions: Flipping & Rotating Your Mattress
Are you supposed to flip your mattress?
It depends on the type of mattress you have. Traditional double-sided mattresses can be flipped, but most modern mattresses are one-sided and are designed to be rotated instead. Always check your manufacturer’s recommendations to know what’s best for your specific mattress.
Should you flip a pillow top mattress?
No, pillow top mattresses do not need to be flipped because the comfort layer is only on one side. Rotating your pillow top mattress every 3–6 months helps promote even wear and maintain comfort.
Can you flip a memory foam mattress?
No, memory foam mattresses should not be flipped since they are built with specific support and comfort layers. Instead, rotating your memory foam mattress every 3–6 months helps prevent sagging and uneven wear.
Should you rotate your mattress?
Yes, rotating your mattress is recommended for most modern mattress types. Today’s mattresses are usually designed to be rotated rather than flipped, which helps promote even wear and maintain comfort. Some double-sided models may still benefit from flipping, and our sleep specialists at Mattress Direct will provide care instructions specific to your mattress at the time of purchase.
How often should I rotate my mattress?
Most mattresses should be rotated every 3–6 months for best results. Rotating regularly helps prevent sagging, supports even wear, and can extend the overall life of your mattress.
