One of the keys to extending the life of your mattress is to flip it occasionally, but what does “occasionally” mean? Admittedly, knowing when to flip your mattress is somewhat subjective, and "occasionally" might mean something totally different to you than to someone else. Consider the age of your mattress

During the first year after purchase, you’ll need to flip your mattress more often than usual because it’s during that first year that most of the settling occurs.

During the first year, every 30 days rotate your mattress so that the foot becomes the head, and if you have a double-sided mattress, flip it over every other month. Continue this rotating/flipping schedule throughout the first year.

Beyond the first year, a general rule of thumb is that rotating and flipping may be done with each change of the seasons.

The result of all this rotating and flipping is that your mattress will wear evenly, free of the sags that come from constantly sleeping in the same spot.

Listen to your body

In addition to the age of your mattress, it’s also essential to listen to your own body. Because everyone’s sleeping position is different, and every mattress is different as well, the suggestions we’ve given should just be a general guide. If you’re finding it difficult to get comfortable at night or you’re waking with aches and pains, that could be a sign that you’re due for another rotation and flip, no matter when you did the last one. Or perhaps it’s time to buy a new mattress. Listening to your own body is the best way to determine when to flip or when it’s time to opt for a new mattress.
